Market-wide Half-Hourly Settlement (MHHS)

Changes to consent for settlement consumption data

As part of an industry-wide push to support the UK’s net zero targets, Ofgem (the government’s energy regulator) has introduced a new system to improve how energy is measured, traded and settled between suppliers and generators.

The introduction of Market-wide Half-Hourly Settlement (MHHS) means that your energy supplier can access your energy consumption data every 30 minutes to better calculate the amount of energy they need to purchase to supply to customers.

What are the benefits of MHHS?

Currently, we collect most energy data through monthly meter readings. One of the main reasons we’d like to receive your data half-hourly is because it allows us to not just see how much energy you’re using, but when it’s being used.

We’ll be able to better understand your usage and predict your energy needs more accurately. This means we can buy the right amount to make sure we’re meeting demand, rather than trying to estimate this based on your average usage.

Having better visibility of your usage through MHHS helps us to achieve our goal of saving you £££s as it will assist us in developing products and services tailored to your needs.

This change also has loads of additional benefits for your business and our planet. Making sure less energy goes to waste will help us to:

  • Meet our Net Zero commitments.
  • Reduce the pressure on the National Grid.
  • Help to prevent power outages.

You’ll need a Smart or Advanced (AMR) meter to access the benefits. Find out how to upgrade your meter(s) here.

What next?

If you’re an existing Utilita Business customer, we intend to send out communications to discuss MHHS (Market-wide Half-Hourly Settlement) proposals in more detail later this year.

Important Notes:

  • This change only affects smart and advanced meters.
